Rotary Classifications

When individuals join a Rotary club, they do so as a representative of their classification – their particular business or profession. Classifications indicate a broad description of an activity or service that a member provides. Name badges worn at Rotary meetings list a Rotarian’s classification. From the beginning, Rotary has used classifications to help ensure that each Rotary club represents a cross–section of businesses leaders, professionals, and community leaders.

The first Rotary club meeting was held in downtown Chicago on 23 February 1905. Paul Harris, a lawyer, Silvester Schiele, a coal dealer, Hiram Shorey, a tailor, and Gustavusl Lohr, a mining engineer were the first four Rotarians.
